The Summer List

It has become a bit of tradition to catalog our summer with a list.  A rubric of recreation, if you will.  Because summer in Vermont is so short.  And because just “being” is a needful thing.  Yes, being in the moments is really what this list is all about.

And each year, the list changes just as our family does.  “Learn to ride a bike” has been long since accomplished.  So has “become a teenager” (Emma) and watch Blue’s Clues (Anna).  I thought I might make an effort to run a 5K this year, but (honest answer!), I’m glad I took it off the list.

Last year, I was gone for four weeks of the summer.  I loved each adventure, but it is good to be home this year.  To slowly savor the morning cups of coffee on the deck.  To go to the pool and eat popcorn and Swedish fish.  To walk the quiet evening roads and watch the gardens bloom.  Just.to.be.  And in that being, I find a harvest of joy!

Psalm 97:11-12 – “Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. Rejoice in the LORD, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.” (NIV)

It looks like most of your “list” items have checkmarks! Congratulations!
