Holiday Weekend Wonder — {Happy July 4th!}

What is freedom? Today we celebrate it with parades and we punctuate it with fireworks.  But I wonder–what is it really–this freedom we extol.

Politicians through the eras have labored to define a notion of freedom.  In my mind’s eye, I can almost see the hallowed hall where men gathered to hash out the terms of it, their tempers running hot as the Philadelphia summer.

Through time since then, we have amended the ideas.  Nuances of meaning have been argued in courtrooms and congressional halls.  Sometimes I don’t like the results and I wonder how this grand American experiment will fare as I send my six into its future.

So we pray for our country and for those in authority.  We bow in thanks before our Maker that we have a place such as this to call our home.  Yet I pray that the abundance of this land will not distract us from pursuing a better country.  I pray that we will use our “so-short” time here to seek eternal freedom–the freedom not bought with the lives of the many, but purchased in full with the precious blood of the One.

So many more reasons to give humble thanks:

July birthday girls, water bottles and shady spots, sunglasses, laughter at the pool, s’mores, patriotic tattoos, fireworks, freedom, balloons . . .
